Chhattisgarh government has increased the police budget for the fiscal 2010-11 by 17 per cent to strengthen the law and order, and combat red terror in the country's worst Naxal-infested state.
With a number of new proposals, the state government has earmarked Rs 1,140 crore for the police department in the budget for the financial year 2010-11. In the last fiscal, the department was allocated Rs 977.20 crore.
The state government is committed to combat the Naxalites and end the menace, Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh said after presenting the state budget 2010-11 in the Assembly today. "The government is making effort to augment the police force and meet their requirements," he added. Dr Singh, who holds finance portfolio, announced that a new police district would be set up at diamond-rich Gariaband. The administration had spotted the movement of Naxalites in the area that is part of revenue district of Raipur.
Besides three new police stations, upgrade of six police posts in Naxal-affected areas had also been proposed in the budget, Singh said. The state government had made a provision of Rs 15.5 crore to build barracks and develop infrastructure for the jawans in the insurgency-hit pockets of the state.
