Poll to decide winner of astrologers vs rationalists contest
Press Trust of India / Mumbai Oct 14, 2009, 10:19 IST

On October 22, the electronic voting machines would not only reveal Maharashtra Assembly poll results but also the winner of another interesting contest -- between rationalists and astrologers.

The Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti (Superstition Eradication Committee), which labels astrology as a "fraud", has invited astrologers to predict the results of the election and announced a Rs 21 lakh prize for the winner, if any.

The participating astrologers are required to obtain horoscopes of 10 candidates of their choice, and predict how many votes each would get and the victory margin in each case. They would also have to predict party-wise break-up of seats in the new Assembly.

"Earlier, our deadline was October 12, but we have decided to extend it up to October 21," Samiti leader Dr Narendra Dabhokar told PTI.

"If the prediction is 80 per cent correct, it would be enough. But the astrologer must also explain the scientific reasoning behind the prediction," Dabhokar said.

This is a bogus poll, because the the programmer, not the people, will decide who wins. If the programmer is 100% honest and infallible, the programmer will respect the people's vote. But I have yet to meet a person who is 100% honest or infallible. If such a person exists, please make him head of the UN immediately! Meanwhile, as a programmer, I'm appalled anyone would want to mix computers and voting. I know what can be done, and no one should trust a vote counted only by computer, ever. That's not rational!!

An interesting contest , albeit a foolish one . Looks like the so called rationalists have gone overboard . They seem to be confusing between what is rational and what is not . Astrology is not only a predictive science , it is a science which is used to study the movement of planets and their effect on worldly phenomena . The most visible and popular face of astrology is the preedictive aspect . It is an aspect which is a part and parcel of the science of astrology . Just like the prediction of the daily weather is a part and parcel of the science of meteorology . We are all aware how terrible the weather predicitons are . Still , does anyone think that this is all bunkum and mumbo jumbo ? On the contrary the media thinks that weather pred
