Pollution notices to Vedanta, NTPC-Kaniha and Visa Steel

Rohit Ferrotech, Seeta Steel asked to close units

The State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) served closure notices on two industries in 2009-10 for failing to comply with the desired pollution emission norms and consistently violating the norms despite showcause notices.

The two industries that were served closure notices were Rohit Ferrotech Ltd operating at the Kalinganagar Industrial Complex in Jajpur district and Seeta Integrated Steel & Energy Ltd at Kalunga Industrial Estate in Sundergarh district.

This was informed by state Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in the state legislative assembly.

Besides closure directions on these two industries, the pollution watchdog served showcause notices on as many as 31 industries in the last fiscal. Among the industries that were served showcause notices are JSL Ltd (formerly Jindal Stainless Ltd)-Kalinganagar, NTPC-Kaniha, Vedanta Aluminium Ltd's smelter unit at Burkhamunda near Jharsuguda, Visa Steel Ltd-Kalinganagar Industrial Complex, Dinabandhu Steel & Power Ltd, Maithan Ispat Ltd-Kalinganagar Industrial Complex to name a few.

It may be noted that the pollution board has been serving showcause and closure notices on industrial units since 2006-07. Closure directions were issued to 18 industries in 2008-09 including Rungta Mines-Keonjhar, Eastern Steel & Power Ltd-Jharsuguda, Jai Balaji Jyoti Steel- Sundergarh, Viraj Steel & Energy Ltd-Rengali and Maheshwari Ispat-Cuttack.

Among the industries that were served closure notices in 2006-07 and 2007-08 were Adhunik Metaliks Ltd-Kuarnmunda, Viraj Steel & Energy Ltd-Rengali, Rohit Ferrotech Ltd-Kalinganagar, Bhusan Power & Steel Ltd-Sambalpur, SPS Steel & Power Ltd-Jharsuguda, Dinabandhu Steel & Power Ltd to name a few.

In 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09, the SPCB served showcause notices on 147 industrial units. The prominent industries that were served showcause notices in this period are Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys Ltd-Therubali (Rayagada), Paradeep Port Trust, Nalco's smelter unit at Angul, Nayagarh Sugar Complex, Paradeep Phosphates Ltd, Rungta Mines Ltd, Rohit Ferrotech Ltd-Kalinganagar and Indian Farmers' Fertilizers Cooperative Ltd (Iffco)-Paradeep.
