| Private medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh have agreed to slash annual fees from Rs 55,000 to Rs 35,000 following an initiative by the state government to facilitate medical education at affordable costs.

| Chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy disclosed this while inaugurating the two-day ninth annual conference of the Cardiological Society of Hyderabad (CSH) here on Saturday.

| He said around 800 medicos would benefit because of the gesture of private medical colleges in the state.

| Reddy also called upon the medical fraternity to suggest ways for a comprehensive medical insurance scheme with nominal premium payment by weaker sections of the society.

| He was responding to a plea by CSH president R Prasad Reddy to emulate the Yasaswini medical insurance scheme launched by the Karnataka government.

| Stating that his government would lay emphasis on preventive medical care, the chief minister urged doctors and hospitals to undertake public awareness campaigns in their respective disciplines.

| Earlier, Kakarla Subba Rao, vice-chancellor and director of Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), called upon the government to take measures to pass an enactment for regulation of nursing homes and hospitals in the state.

| He also called for greater practice of tele medicine to reach out to the people in nook and corner of the state. Prasad Reddy informed that around 250 doctors were taking part in deliberations on various subjects. |
