To promote Punjab as a lucrative IT investment destination, the state government is mulling a proposal to allot land to IT companies free of cost in return to their guarantee to provide employment.
"Land will be made available free (of cost) to IT companies which will assure that they will provide certain number of employment in their projects," Punjab Principal Secretary (Industry and Commerce) S S Channy told reporters here today.
Channy was replying to a question whether high rate of land in Punjab was becoming a deterrent to new IT investments in the state.
Elaborating the plan, state-owned IT promoting body Punjab Infotech Managing Director R K Verma said the (free land) proposal was under consideration of the state government and its various modalities like number of employment and industry zones were being worked out.
"Under this initiative, industry will be given an opportunity for limited period to avail the benefits," he said.
Verma said the state government was following the model adopted by the Andhra Pradesh government to provide land to IT companies free of cost.
As part of its efforts to create conducive atmosphere for the growth of IT industry, Punjab government is setting up of an IT SEZ in Kapurthala spread over 50 acres of land. "It is expected to be operational within two years," an official said.
Punjab Infotech has also partnered with Industry body TiE for setting up state's first IT incubation center in Mohali. Spread over 12,000 square feet, the center will have ready to move in infrastructure with plug and play facilities, the official said.
Punjab is also in process of bringing out its new IT policy 2009 which would focus on giving a fillip to the information technology sector.
