PwC to restructure PSUs
Our Bureau / Kolkata December 08, 2005
The West Bengal government is keen to appoint global IT and consultancy major PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to restructure the state government owned transport corporations in the state.

The chief minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, disclosed this on Wednesday while inaugurating the new facility of PwC in Salt Lake. PwC was celebrating 125th years of existence in India by setting up a 100,000 square feet facility. The facility would house the global training centre of PwC and was expected to provide employment to 1000 people.

The chief minister said the state transport corporations in the state government were in a bad shape.

"We are giving lot of subsidy without any positive impact. We would like to change this and PwC could do this for us," he said.

PwC recently managed the sale of Great Eastern Hotel (GEH) and was now working on the restructuring plan for the West Bengal State Electricity Board (WBSEB).

There were five state-owned transport corporations in West Bengal. These were West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation, SBSTC, NBSTC, CSTC and CTC. "We shall take the decision soon on the restructuring," Bhattacharjee said.

Earlier, praising PwC for promoting Kolkata as an IT destination, the state IT minister Manabendra Mukherjee requested PwC to set up a university for accounting and management education in the state.

"You may consider a PwC university for accounting and management here in the state and the state was ready to extend all kind of support for this," he said. PwC managing director Roopen Roy said the new centre was equipped with state-of-the-art presentation facilities.

PwC currently had eight centres in India.
