Raju in ICU, will be under observation for some days
BS Reporter / Hyderabad Sep 09, 2009, 00:33 IST

The condition of B Ramalinga Raju, founder of Satyam Computer Services and an inmate of Chanchalguda Central Prison since January, when he confessed to a mssive accounting fraud, is now stable. Raju was admitted to Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) on Monday after he complained of chest pain.

According to NIMS’ medical superintendent, N Satyanarayana, Raju needs to be kept under medical observation for some days. Various tests have been done on him. He is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Two months earlier, doctors examined Raju at Chanchalguda jail and diagnosed him to be suffering from chronic active hepatitis (Genotype-I) and advised him to undergo treatment. Raju was supposed to be brought to NIMS this week for treatment of Hepatitis-C.

“Treatment for Hepatitis-C is a time consuming process and it can go on for several weeks,'' Satyanarayana said.

The police are guarding the ICU. It is learnt family members, including his wife, Nandini Raju, and his son, Teja Raju, visited the hospital on Monday night.

Chanchalguda Central Prison superintendent, Chandrasekhar, said the reports on Raju were expected tomorrow.

Raju has been imprisoned since January 9, two days after he confessed to the massive accounting fraud at Satyam. His bail petitions have been dismissed.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the case from the state police, has filed a preliminary chargesheet in the court and is preparing to file a second one.

The court has also allowed CBI to conduct a lie detector test (polygraph test) and brain mapping (F300 testing) on Raju and two others. However, Raju's counsels have appealed against this to the High Court, where it is pending.

One of Raju’s counsel’s objections to the lie detection test, when the matter was argued in April, was that the Satyam founder suffered from cardiac-related health problems and a polygraph test would subject him to mental stress.

The High Court had recently agreed on a special court for speedy trial of the Satyam case.
