Rajya Sabha to debate climate meet on Monday
BS Reporter / New Delhi Dec 19, 2009, 00:55 IST

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government today managed to pass five Bills in a hurry and adjourn the Lok Sabha sine die. But the main Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) forced the government to keep the Rajya Sabha open for a debate on Copenhagen meeting on Monday.

Even as the BJP and other Opposition parties are gearing to grind the UPA on the climate change summit, the government had no other choice but to succumb to the Opposition pressure on this issue.

The top BJP leadership had agreed to allow the government to adjourn the Lok Sabha after the four Bills were passed. But the BJP leaders made it clear that they want a discussion on the Copenhagen meeting in the Rajya Sabha after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh came back from the Danish capital.

As the climate change summit is not expected to yield any result, the Opposition will question the government’s voluntary moves on reducing climate emissions even as the advanced countries have not agreed to reduce their emissions.

In a move that is dubbed as a ‘got up game’ by the Opposition, the Congress MPs from Andhra Pradesh today took the lead to disrupt the proceedings in the Lok Sabha this morning.

Members in favour of a separate Telangana state and those opposing it—both stood up and started raising slogans. An undeterred government passed the Commercial Division of High Courts bill, Civil Defence (Amendment) Bill, Salaries and Allowances of Ministers (Amendment) Bill, Trade Marks (Amendment) Bill and the Legal Metrology Bill one by one.

The government also introduced the Bill to amend the transplantation of human organs act and the Bill to amend the State Bank of Hyderabad Act and the State Bank of India (Subsidiary Banks) act.
