Rebuilding past, single biggest driver: Mahindra Satyam
Press Trust of India / Bangalore Mar 03, 2011, 21:17 IST

Mahindra SatyamMahindra Satyam, which has been focussing on strategies to rebuild itself post the scam in 2009 involving founder B Ramalinga Raju, today said it was the story of rebuilding its past that was the single most driver for the company.

"For us the story of resurrection, the story of rebuilding, the story of winning the past glory is the single biggest driver today," Mahindra Satyam Chief Marketing Officer and Chief People Officer Hari Thalapalli told reporters here.

"The injury is healed but the scars are still there. There are no fears or apprehensions anymore. Now we are talking only about innovation and growth. For us the moment of gloom are gone and it will be only glory now onwards," he said.

Talking about hiring, he said, "In the last quarterly results we said that we look to hire 6,000-7,000 people during 2011-12. The hiring will be a mix of both lateral and campus selection. I believe at this stage the laterals will be on the higher side. For next year we will be moving back to an equal split between campus and laterals and a year after freshers will be higher."

"So the people who are joining us from the ivy league campuses, up to 90% of these (fresh graduates) believe in achieving this turnaround. I think that's what will drive Mahindra Satyam. We believe it genuinely, we have a great story now as we go forward," he added.

Replying to a question on wage hike he said, "At present there are no trends that I could specifically tell you but we will decide on it in the next two months. We will look at what the industry is doing, what are the compulsions of the industry and we will come up with it."

To a question on attrition, he said, "The attrition rate is quite high, but some of the best performing organisations, some of the best paying systems still have attrition in the lower 20s or thereabout. So I don't think it is a question of money. It is the purpose of your work that you need to see than the wage hikes, I feel."

Asked how it dealt on dealing with the employee strength that reduced from 50,000 post scam, he said, "The total employee strength is 28,800 now. Before the scam we had 50,000 and we released 10,000 after that. It was an unusual situation. There was no choice for us."

On whether they were looking at suing PWC, he said, "I don't want to say anything. We had such a meeting, the Board will review that. At this stage, there is no specific decision taken on either way. I think at an appropriate time the Board will review that. We have made it as an option. We have nothing prepared as yet."
