The Centre plans to connect Itanagar, capital of Arunachal Pradesh, with 4-lane highway by constructing two bridges over river Jia Bhorali and Brahmaputra.

In a letter written by Union road transport and highways minister, Kamal Nath, to Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, Nath stated that the route of 4-lanning was modified to connect Itanagar directly with Nagaon in central Assam by constructing 190-km 4-lane road.

Nath said that Rs 1,393.58 crore had been sanctioned for improvement of 539 km of national highways to 2-lane with paved shoulders under Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for North-East (SARDP-NE) in Assam and approval for estimates of 146 km length was under process.

“The national highways passing through remote and backward areas of North Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, NC Hills, Barak Valley, including Hailakandi district, Karbi Anglong, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts, which hitherto remained neglected have been attended under this flagship programme,” Nath said.

Nath said that none of the projects of Assam as approved by the cabinet earlier, including 4-laning from Numaligarh to Dibrugarh, under SARD-NE, had been shelved by the ministry.

He further said that 4-laning of national highways covering a stretch of 274 km from Doboka to Dimapur (124 kms), Silchar to Lailapur (40 km) and Rattachera to Churaibari (110 km) had been included under National Highway Development Project-III.
