| The Jaiprakash Power Ventures, a subsidiary of Jaiprakash Industries Ltd, is developing a hydroelectric project across the river Alaknanda in the Chamoli district of Uttaranchal, at a cost of Rs 1,900 crore.

| Scheduled to be opened in December 2006, the Vishnuprayag hydroelectric project would have an undergr-ound power station with an installed capacity of 400 Mw, V Jain, executive vice-president of the company, said here. The project would generate 2,060 million units of power with average power generation cost of Rs 2 a unit, he said.

| The Jaiprakash Power Ventures will develop the project on the “build, own, operate and transfer” basis.
