RSS should guide BJP on women bill: Uma
Press Trust of India / New Delhi Jun 15, 2009, 15:22 IST

Former BJP leader Uma Bharti today said RSS should give "right directions" to BJP to ensure "quota within quota" in the women's reservation bill.

"I consider this the appropriate time for the RSS to give right directions to the BJP keeping in mind the 1983 resolution of RSS Chief Balasaheb Deoras to fight for quota within quota reservation for backward, dalit and adivasi women," she told reporters here.

The Bharatiya Jan Shakti Party chief recalled that Deoras at the Akhil Bhartiya Pratinidhi Sabha of RSS at Nagpur had said it would not be appropriate to ignore reservation for backward classes as it would be against national interest and Hindu unity.

Pointing out that Hindus cannot be united by "ignoring" dalits, STs and backwards, she wondered why BJP and Congress are opposing reservation for dalit, ST and backward women.

She suggested that the RSS should make the Swayamsewaks — who have been newly elected to the Lok Sabha —  aware of the 1983 resolution.

"I request the RSS office-bearers to take over the functioning of the BJP as most of its workers are associated with the Sangh, and get it organised and disciplined," she said.

Bharti supported the statement of JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav that he will consume poison if the women's bill was passed in its present form.

Opposing rotation of Lok Sabha seats for women, she said, "If a woman MP knows that she can't be re-elected for the second term, there will be no accountability. Any person needs at least three terms to prove his or her leadership qualities," she added.

The former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister suggested that the number of Lok Sabha seats could be increased so that every constituency can be represented both by men and women.

Asked if the absence of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the "lack of control" by L K Advani was the reason behind the present state of affairs in BJP, she said cadre-based parties do not get affected by individuals.
