As many as 87,950 families have registered for work under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) in Mysore district.
Some 266,424 families are expected to register for work under the national programme, which came into force on April 1 in the district. Of the 87,950 families registered so far, family employment cards have been given to 74,380 families.
About 22,657 works have been identified in the district for execution under the programme. They comprise of works like water conservation, forestry, minor irrigation channels, land improvement of BPL cardholders among the SC and ST groups, irrigation, flood protection, school playground development, development of lands of agriculture, horticulture and sericulture centres, renovation of tanks and improvement of rural roads.
After approval by the taluk panchayats, the Mysore Zilla Panchayat has cleared these projects and the approvals sent to taluk implementation officers for execution. The implementing agencies have been given capacity-building training.
Around Rs 21 crore were released for the NREG programme, of which the Centre’s share is just over Rs 19 crore and the state’s Rs 1.90 crore. So far, over Rs 2.31 crore has been released to the taluk level programme authorities.
The works have begun in 10 villages of Nanjangud, six villages of H D Kote, three villages of Hunsur, two villages of K R Nagar and one village each in Periyapatna and T Narasipur taluks.
The NREGP guarantees employment for 100 days during a fiscal year for rural families which volunteer for employment. By providing employment, it proposes to create works of permanent nature beneficial to the local community. Besides strengthening the life support of the rural poor, it lays emphasis on environmental protection, strengthening women’s power, checking migration of rural poor for work, and providing economic strength to the poor families in rural areas.
While the Centre provides 90 per cent of the grants, the state shares the balance. The Centre shares the entire wages paid to the rural workers lacking skills.
The list of works to be taken up for execution has been prepared in 235 village panchayats of seven taluks of Mysore district after holding ward and village-level meetings.
Taking into consideration the number of BPL cardholders in the district, an estimate of Rs 167 crore was prepared for 2008-09 towards payment of wages to double the number of BPL cards and sent to the Centre through the State Government for approval. Rs 40.47 crore have been sanctioned by release of a Government of Order.
Wages are fixed at Rs 82 per day for 100 days.
