Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has approved the first major modernisation project for IISCO Steel Plant following the merger of the ailing steel unit with the company.
SAIL set the revival of IISCO in motion with the rebuilding of coke oven battery at an estimated cost of Rs 319 crore.
The steel plant requires two batteries at a time to produce 0.75 million tonne per annum of coke for producing one million tonne of hot metal.
The rebuilding of the battery would have to be completed by 2008-09 to ensure uninterrupted coke supply.
The move would also help in lowering coke rate in the blast furnace. The rebuilding was part of the modernisation programme drawn up by the company entailing an investment of Rs 8,017 crore. The investment would expand the production capacity from the current level of 0.85 million tonne to 2.5 million tonne by 2011-12.
The investment plan also includes upgradation and expansion of mines and collieries.
