SAIL provides special equipped training bus for differently abled
Announcement / Corporate Aug 03, 2009, 20:12 IST

In its endeavour to contribute to the welfare and mainstreaming of differently-abled children, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) today donated a bus equipped with training aids to Deepalaya, one of Delhi’s largest operational NGO working in the areas of education, health, gender equality, vocational training, etc. SAIL Chairman Mr SK Roongta flagged off the bus in the presence of Secretary & Chief Executive, Deepalaya Mr TK Mathew, Director (Personnel)/SAIL Mr G. Ojha, Director (Finance)/SAIL Mr Soiles Bhattacharya and other senior officials from Ispat Bhavan, New Delhi.

SAIL is supporting Deepalaya in its innovative approach of ‘education on wheels’ for differently-abled children.  The bus will provide accessible education along with special services like speech and occupational therapy, physiotherapy, counseling and information about various Government facilities to the differently-abled at their doorsteps. The bus will currently be reaching out to beneficiaries in the areas  of Jagdamba Camp in Khirkee Village and Bhoomiheen Camp in Govindpuri.

Flagging off the special bus, Mr Roongta said SAIL was “happy to make a small contribution to the cause of the differently-abled”. Mr TK Mathew on his part, terming the initiative ‘therapy on wheels’, informed the gathering about the activities of Deepalaya and said the two organisations will continue to collaborate for various causes.

Committed to bringing development and growth in every corner of the country, education is one of the key thrust areas of SAIL’s Corporate Social Responsibility activities. SAIL runs more than 135 schools, employing over 6000 teachers and providing education to about 73,000 students in its townships.  It also supports about 268 schools and more than 55,000 students attend these schools. The communities across a total of 394 villages in the periphery areas of SAIL plants and units benefit from these schools.   In recognition of its CSR initiatives, SAIL has received numerous awards,  including the prestigious FICCI Award for 'Rural and Community Development Initiatives, Businessworld-FICCI-SEDF CSR Award, etc.
