| Country's largest colour picture tube (CPT) maker, Samtel Colour has doubled its production capacity from the present 5.5 million CPT per annum to 10 million.

| The company has put up a new line in Kota to manufacture 20-21 flat tube for an investment of Rs150 crore to produce 2.5 million tubes per annum.

| The company had earlier put up a production line to produce 29 super flat CPTs, which is expected to generate annual revenues of Rs 750 crore.

| The new line at Kota will have an annual turnover potential of Rs 300 crore.

| According to managing director Satish Kaura, the new facilities are added to cater to the increased demand on the exports front.

| The expansion funded largely from internal accruals and some debt would take place within the current campuses of Samtel in Kota and Ghaziabad.

| The Company has a market share of over 40 per cent in the domestic market and is supplying picture tubes to all the major domestic TV manufacturers including multinationals. It has nine factories and has over 5,000 employees.

| According to Kaura, the company is also developing new technologies in display areas.

| The Samtel Centre for Display Technologies at IIT Kanpur is working on developing new technologies and products in the area of displays, which will be pushed into the market later.

| The centre has been working on a flagship research project on various display technologies since 2002. Also, short term collaborative projects on emerging technologies and collaborative projects cathode ray tube manufacturing have also been undertaken at the centre.

| For the financial year 2005-06, Samtel Colour recorded revenue to Rs 896.4 crore.

| "For most of the year, the CPT industry was subjected to serious price challenges. We are one of the few players in this sector globally who remain cash earnings positive despite such a tough operating environment. We have also been able to sequentially reduce our bill-of-material to sales ratio," Kaura said. |
