| Satyam Computer Services is looking at escalating its proposed operations in Kolkata, in bid to make it one of the top three of its development centres.
| |
| Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the foundation stone laying ceremony for its development centre, B Rama Raju, managing director, Satyam Computer said, the company had initiated discussions with the state government for 40-50 acres.
| |
| The company laid the foundation stone for its Kolkata operations today at Sector V, Salt Lake, the information technology hub of the city. Raju said, ideally the company would like to operate out of large campus.
| |
| To begin with the company was eyeing a strength of 2,000 employees by 2008 at its development centre.
| |
| The development centre would be ready in a year and would be spread over 2.77 acres.
| |
| However, the goal was to eventually scale it up to 10,000 employees. Satyam Computer has five development centres.
| |
| Raju said, the company would consider setting up business process outsourcing (BPO) operations in Kolkata.
| |
| The rationale behind setting up operations in Kolkata was its large talent pool. Raju said, many of the company's senior officials were from West Bengal who were keen on coming back.
| |
| He explained that the scaling up of operations would depend on the company's ability to attract talent. Raju commended the state government on the physical infrastructure and said that he was able to make it to Salt Lake from the airport within 15 minutes. "This clearly shows the government's focus on physical infrastructure" he said.
| |
| However, Raju believed that the IT sector would have to tap the rural sector for human resources. Currently there were one million knowledge workers in the country and according to Nasscom estimates it was expected to grow to two million.
| |
| Raju said, to cater to the demand the sector would have to turn to the rural sector.
| |
| As part of corporate social responsibility, Satyam Computer had adopted 150 villages and was able to create 200 jobs in some villages in Andhra Pradesh.
| |
| Addressing the gathering, the chief minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, said currently there were 40,000 professionals in the IT sector in Kolkata. He said, next week a team from Infosys would be visiting to evaluate prospects in the city. |
