SAV our souls
BS Motoring / Mumbai July 02, 2005
At this year’s Geneva Motor Show, Ford’s European division showed off the SAV concept.

Though Ford never commited anything then, the favourable response that it got from the media and the audience means that you will soon be able to drive one. Or at least those of you who live in Europe, anyway.

The SAV adds yet another dimension to Ford’s European portfolio and will be positioned between the Ford Mondeo and the Galaxy MPV.

While Ford is yet to finalise the name and the technical details, they have decided to build it at their facility in Belgium.

The SAV concept branches off a bit from Ford’s New-Edge design philosophy, but is pretty good looking for a people/ load carrier.

Maybe they will call it the Smooth-Edge design. Or maybe they won’t. Anyway, the SAV will go on sale in the summer of 2006 and will offer flexible seats with seating for seven.

Pretty Savvy

Malaysian car maker Proton has just gone Savvy. Now before you think they have hired an all-new fashion deigner to design their staff uniforms, have a look at the car instead.

The Savvy is Proton’s new small car that is powered by a 1200cc engine, mated to a five speed manual gearbox. Power is said to be in the range of 74 horses and the car is claimed to achieve a top speed of 170 kph.

Proton is pretty gung-ho about the Savvy and is even projecting it as the first Lotus that people would buy. Um... at 74 bhp, it certainly doesn’t look like one.

But Proton-owned Lotus says that though it’s not a sports car, it does have certain elements that will give the driver a taste of what it’s like to drive one of the world’s best handling vehicles.

The Savvy will go on sale in the UK this November, where it will have to match up to the Honda Jazz, Toyota Yaris, Chevrolet Matiz and, in all probability, the sceptical motoring media.
