The Supreme Court has sought reply from the Maharashtra government on IOC's plea challenging the state's decision to get its storage tanks calibrated, which is measurement to guard against losses due to tank shells expanding or contracting.
A Bench headed by Justice Tarun Chatterjee issued notice to the Maharashtra government, which asked IndianOil Corporation to have its stationary storage tanks calibrated.
According to IOC, the tanks installed by oil companies for storing liquid petroleum products were measured in accordance with the Standards and Weights and Measures Act, 1976.
IOC has moved the apex court seeking transfers of the petitions pending before High Courts of Patna, Allahabad, Bombay and Madras on the grounds that there was conflict of opinion among the Courts.
IOC had moved the Bombay High Court challenging the notice issued by the authorities purported to be under the Maharashtra Standards of Weights and Measures (Enforcement) Rules 1987 (as amended in 2000) asking the firm to get its storage tanks calibrated. However, the High Court had refused to stay the impugned notices.
