Second look
BS Motoring / Mumbai October 23, 2004
We have a Palio and are planning to buy a second, bigger car. We have heard lots about the Hyundai Accent CRDi, but the Honda City is also supposed to be a good car, though I don't like its looks. We are looking at fuel efficiency and also a car which is smooth and comfortable, which can be effortlessly driven by my wife. What are the all the cars in the Accent CRDi range and which one would you suggest?

Manuj, Hyderabad

You may not like the looks of the Honda City, but it's a new age, contemporary design and is built around international passive safety norms.

It is smooth, comfortable and easy to drive too. And of course, it's remarkably fuel efficient for a car in its category. However, if you still feel that its appearance doesn't go down well with you, try the Accent Viva CRDi instead, which will give you all the benefits of the Accent CRDi at a cheaper price point. Looks sporty too!

I want to buy a new car, and am a bit confused. I want a car with looks, performance and good after-sales service. The cars which come to my mind are the Wagon R LXi and Santro Xing XP. The Santro has the looks, while the Wagon R has a good market image. I drive about 30 to 40 km a day. Which is the better car to buy?

Balwinder, Via Email

The choice, as you say, is difficult indeed. Both are equally good and both come with a good after-sales service reputation. Fuel economy is similar, though the Santro proves to be easier to drive in town – torque and power is available at lower revs and that makes a bit of a difference.

The Santro is also equipped with a better gearshift. To the Wagon R's credit, overall ride quality is better and the boot is more spacious. Also, space utilisation in the Suzuki is better – more shelves and cubbyholes to store stuff in. Our bet would still be the Santro, since it's also recently been strengthened to address latest European car crash norms.

Test drive both cars and pick the one that suits you the best. Space – it's the Wagon R. Ease of driving – it's the Santro.
