Sensex ends below 15K on RIL-RNRL verdict

SensexThe Sensex today opened 42 points lower at 15,196, owing to weak global cues. Thereafter, the index rebounded into the positive zone to touch a high of 15,261.

The index, however, failed to hold gains and slipped after the Bombay High Court's verdict on the RIL-RNRL gas dispute case. Heavy selling by foreign investors pushed the index to touch a low of 14,807, down 454 points.

The index kept on plunging on account of profit booking in the oil & gas, metal, capital goods, realty and auto stocks.

The BSE Oil & Gas slipped 4.5% to 10,036. The Metal, Capital Goods, Realty, Auto, Consumer Durables, Power and Technology indices were down 1-4% each.

The Sensex, which was down for the last three straight trading days, ended below crucial 15,000-mark today. The index finally ended with a loss of 362 points at 14,875.

The market breadth was extremely negative - out of 2,700 shares traded, 1,874 declined, 768 advanced and 58 were unchanged today.

INDEX SHAKERS...

Sterlite and Reliance slumped 7.5% each to Rs 663 and Rs 2,172, respectively.

Tata Steel, Larsen & Toubro, Hindalco, DLF and Tata Motors slipped 4-5% each to Rs 434, Rs 1,507, Rs 96, Rs 352 and Rs 342, respectively.

Reliance Communications, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti, Sun Pharma, Tata Power, BHEL and Wipro were down 2-4% each at Rs 319, Rs 756, Rs 1,048, Rs 1,279, Rs 1,139, Rs 2,145 and Rs 402, respectively.

...AND THE MOVERS

Ranbaxy gained 2% at Rs 288. TCS, Hindustan Unilever, Reliance Infrastructure, ACC and Grasim were up 1-2% each.

OTHER PROMINENT LOSERS...

India Infoline slumped 10% to Rs 123. Voltas, Gujarat State Petronet, GVK Power, Gujarat State Petronet, Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation, Torrent Power, GMR Infrastructures, Reliance Petroleum, Lanco Infrastructures and Essar Oil were down 6-9% each.

...AND THE GAINERS

Reliance Natural Resources zoomed 24% to Rs 108. It was followed by Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers, Jai Corporation, Reliance Power, Chambal Fertilisers & Chemicals, Exide, Hindustan Petroleum, Bharat Petoleum, PNB, Lupin, HCL and Syndicate advanced 2-8% each.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance Natural Resources topped the value chart with a total turnover of Rs 1,101.19 crore. It was followed by Reliance (Rs 474.47 crore), Bharti Airtel (Rs 427.65 crore), Reliance Power (Rs 263.49 crore) and Unitech (Rs 237.49 crore).

Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of 105.35 million shares. It was followed by Unitech (27 million), Satyam Computer (Rs 16.22 million), Suzlon (Rs 14.10 million) and Reliance Power (Rs 13 million).
