Sensex ends down 218pts

Sensex ends (provisional) at 16,880 - down 218 points. Nifty ends (provisional) down 84 points at 5,021.

The Sensex is quoting at 16,861, lower by 235 points and the Nifty is at 5028, down 77 points.

The indices have further extended their losses in the past hour, with banking, auto and PSU sectors being the major draggers. The Sensex is at 16,970, weaker by 126 points and the Nifty is placed at 5059, down 46 points.

Reliance Communications has declined 2.5% to Rs 176. Tata Motors has slipped 2.5% to Rs 692 and HDFC Bank has shed 2.4% at Rs 1,714. SBI and ICICI Bank are the other major losers.

Among the Sensex gainers, ITC has soared 1.8% to Rs 235, Hindalco has added 1.7% at Rs 142 and Tata Steel has put on 1.1% at Rs 550.

The market breadth is weak. Out of 2854 stocks traded on the BSE, there are 954 advancing stocks as against 954 declines.
