Sensex ends near day's low, Realty index plunges

The Sensex today opened up 45 points at 14,831. It surged to a high of 14,907 in early trades.

However, the index slipped into red within the first hour of trade. The index thereafter, continued to slip deeper into red and touched a low of 14,420, - down 487 points from the day's high - towards the end of the day.

The Sensex finally ended near the day's low, with a loss of 292 points at 14,494.

The BSE Realty index was the major loser and plunged nearly 7.5% to end at 3,207.

INDEX SHAKERS..

Reliance, Larsen & Toubro and ICICI Bank were the major draggers in terms of points on the Sensex today. They cumulatively accounted for nearly half the day's losses. While Reliance alone accounted for 63 points loss of the index, Larsen & Toubro and ICICI Bank shaved-off 37 points and 33 points, respectively off the index.

Reliance and Larsen & Toubro dropped 3% each to Rs 2,023 and Rs 1,568, respectively. ICICI Bank shed 3.5% at Rs 722.

In terms' of percentage -

DLF slumped 8% to Rs 311. Tata Motors ended in negative for the second straight day following weak FY09 results. The stock plunged 7% to Rs 291. Jaiprakash Associates shed 7% to Rs 205.

Metal major, Sterlite dropped 6% to Rs 608 on weak FY09 numbers. Reliance Infrastructure and Reliance Communications shed 5.5% each to Rs 1,197 and Rs 290, respectively.

ACC, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Steel, Hindalco, ITC, BHEL, SBI, HDFC and NTPC were the other major losers.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS...

United Spirits topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 671.12 crore. It was followed by Suzlon (Rs 269.70 crore), HDIL (Rs 228.48 crore), Educomp Solutions (223.76 crore), and Reliance Communications (Rs 187 crore).

The volume chart was led by Suzlon with trades of over 24 million shares, followed by Unitech (20.34 million), Ispat Industies (14.42 million), Reliance Natural Resources (13.49 million) and IFCI (12.49 million).
