Sensex ends up 109pts

SensexThe Sensex has ended (provisionally) at 16,173 - up 109 points.

The Nifty has ended (provisional) up 37 points at 4,803.

The Sensex has again started slipping and is now up 107 points at 16,170.

The NSE Nifty is up 34 points at 4,799.

The markets today opened with positive gaps on strong cues from the global markets. The Sensex opened at 16,137 and touched a high of 16,284 - up 220 points from the previous close. Metal and realty stocks were responsible for the early gains of the BSE index.

However, selling in index heavy-weight Reliance and Infosys saw the markets trimming gains in the noon session. The Sensex slipped 209 points from the day's high to a low of 16,075.

The Sensex has recovered from the day's low now and is up 133 points at 16,197.

The Nifty is up 42 points at 4,808.

The BSE Mid-cap and Small-cap indices have outperformed the larger market. The indices have gained around 2% each at 6,246 and 7,153, respectively.

Jaiprakash Associates has rallied 4.5% o Rs 227. Tata Steel and SBI have gained 3.6% each at Rs 502 and Rs 2,217, respectively.

DLF and Sterlite have added 2.2% each to Rs 381 and Rs 804, respectively.

HDFC, Reliance Infrastructure, Mahindra & Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro and Sun Pharma have moved up around 1% each.

However, Tata Power has shed 3% at Rs 1,283. FMCG stocks - Hindustan Unilever and ITC have dropped 1.5% each to Rs 249 and Rs 274, respectively.

Hero Honda and ACC have also declined.

The market breadth is fairly positive. Out of 2,717 stocks traded 1,921 have advanced while 725 have declined.
