Sensex near 52-week high; autos outperform while metals lag

Markets have surged post the general elections. The Sensex recently touched its 52 week high on August 4, 2009. Markets have gone up on renewed hopes that the economy is on its path to revival. However, most of the Sensex stocks point to the other direction. Out of the 30 Sensex stocks, more than three-fourth of the stocks have underperformed the Sensex in the last one year.

The Sensex is currently at 14,785 - down just 7.6% from its 52-week high of 16,002. However among the Sensex 30, as many as 23 stocks have underperformed in the same period.

Reliance Communications (Rs 250) has been the biggest underperformer and is currently trading 41% lower from is 52-week high of Rs 426. DLF (Rs 375) has slumped 42% from its 52-week of Rs 546.

Metal stocks too have been the major underperformers. Tata Steel (Rs 448) has dropped 28% from its 52-week high of Rs 622. Hindalco (Rs 104) and Sterlite (Rs 623) have tumbled 25% and 18% from their respective 52-week highs.

Sensex heavyweights, Reliance and ICICI Bank are also down sharply from their 52-week highs. Reliance (Rs 1,943) has declined 22% from its 52-week high of Rs 2,490. ICICI Bank (Rs 719) has moved down 11% from its 52-week high of Rs 807.

Auto stocks Hero Honda (Rs 1,404) and Mahindra & Mahindra (Rs 769) have dipped 18-21% each from their respective 52-week highs.

Outerprforming stocks - Wipro and ONGC are close to their 52-week highs. While, Wipro (Rs 505) is just 3% short of its 52-week high of Rs 522, ONGC (Rs 1,183) is 4% away from its 52-week high of Rs 1,230.

On the other hand, out-performance in terms of net returns compared to 52-week lows, 21 of the Sensex stocks have gained more than that of the Sensex.

The smart recovery in world markets, has seen the Sensex soar 92% from its 52-week low of 7,697.

Jaiprakash Associates (Rs 209) has skyrocketed 345% from its 52-week low of Rs 47. Sterlite has soared 277% from its 52-week low of Rs 165.

Vehicle makers, Tata Motors (Rs 444) and Mahindra & Mahindra (Rs 769) have zoomed 264% and 226% from their 52-week lows of Rs 122 and Rs 236, respectively.

Reliance Infrastructure, Grasim Industries, Tata Steel, Maruti Suzuki and DLF have also soared over 200% from their respective 52-week lows.

However, Sun Pharma added just 24% from its 52-week low of Rs 953. Bharti Airtel advanced 13% from its 52 week low of Rs 360.

Stocks which gained less than the Sensex in the past 52-week period include Hindustan Unilever (37%), TCS (43%), ITC (69%).

To summarise, other than Reliance Communications metal stocks seem to have bore the brunt of the selling in the downfall, while the recovery seems to have been very swift in auto and realty stocks.
