Sharp rally boosts returns

The markets started the week with a bang, with the Sensex and the Nifty, hitting the upper circuit twice for the first time in history on Monday May 18, 2009, after the Congress-led UPA got a clear mandate in Lok Sabha elections. The markets thereafter consolidated at higher levels.

The Smart Portfolios benchmark BSE 200 index soared over 17 per cent to 1,684. In the process, the benchmark's portfolio value appreciated sharply from Rs 8.07 lakh to Rs 9.45 lakh for the week ended May 23, 2009. The net worth is still down 5.5 per cent from its inception on September 1, 2008.

Out of a total 123 trades - a vast majority, 86 were on the buy side. Cumulatively, the four fund managers were net buyers of shares worth Rs 21.93 lakh and made double-digit profit in percentage terms.

Amar Ambani's net worth has zoomed 25.9 per cent to Rs 12.58 lakh, Kashyap Pujara's portfolio has soared 21.6 per cent to Rs 12.16 lakh. Sadanand Shetty's portfolio has appreciated by 18.1 per cent to Rs 11.81 lakh, and Anand Agarwal's net worth was up 12.4 per cent at Rs 11.24 lakh.

BOUNCING BACK

From a loss of 5.6 per cent last week, Anand Agarwal's net worth has seen a sharp turnaround and is now up a little over 19 per cent to Rs 11.24 lakh as against Rs 9.44 lakh. Last week, he executed 27 trades, of which 15 were on the buy side.

He has included TRF, GMR Infra and Bharati Shipyard in his portfolio. TRF alone accounts for nearly 23 per cent of his total investments. Out of 11 stocks he held, three were in red and these are Reliance Industries, Bharati Shipyard and BHEL. They were down 1-3 per cent. Agarwal was a net buyer of stocks worth Rs 5 lakh and holds Rs 1.23 lakh in cash.

STEADY PROFITS

Sadanand Shetty gains were almost in line with the benchmark. His net worth appreciated by 16 per cent to Rs 11.81 lakh from Rs 10.18 lakh. He also was the second most active manager with 31 trades.

Out of 31 trades he executed, 21 were on the buy side and he has now included IVRCL Infra, Orbit Corporation and DLF in his portfolio. Shetty was a net buyer of stocks worth Rs 5.27 lakh. He exited from Ess Dee Aluminium and Crisil in which he has made a handsome gain of 21.4 per cent and 31 per cent, respectively. He also sold some stocks of SBI and Balarampur Chini, gaining around 31 to 72 per cent. He now holds cash worth Rs 1.22 lakh.

KASHYAP PUJARA

Kashyap Pujara's net worth rose 22.58 per cent to Rs 12.16 lakh as compared with Rs 9.92 lakh. Last week, he executed 28 trades of which 21 were on the buy side; he was a net buyer of stocks worth Rs 5.18 lakh.

He has added Aditya Birla Nuvo, Oriental Bank of Commerce and Reliance Capital to his portfolio while he booked partial gains in SBI and Ashok Leyland. All the 11 stocks in his portfolio are in the green, except Sterlite Industries, which is down 2.94 per cent. The value of his investment is Rs 11.2 lakh and he continues to hold cash worth Rs 0.96 lakh.

Amar Ambani was the most active manager with 37 trades and also the biggest buyer with net purchases of Rs 7.18 lakh. Of the 37 trades he executed, 29 were on the buy side. His net worth rose 19.4 per cent to Rs 12.58 lakh from Rs 10.54 lakh on a week-on-week basis. He now holds Rs 0.85 lakh in cash.

Ambani exited from GSPL, 3i Infotech and GTL Infra in which he made a profit between 20 and 45 per cent. He added Indiabulls Real Estate, GMR Infra, GVK Power and Nagarjuna Fertilisers to his portfolio. Most of the stocks in his portfolio are in the green, up anywhere between 1 and 57 per cent.
