Siemens to offer CRDi tech to local auto firms
Prabodh Chandrasekhar / Mumbai February 20, 2006
Engineering major Siemens is planning to enter the common-rail direct injection (CRDi) diesel technology market in the country. The company aims to provide the technology to Indian auto makers.

“Siemens has definite plans to venture into the common rail market. The talks in this regard have begun with leading auto players in the country,” said J Schubert, managing director, Siemens India.

Schubert, however, did not elaborate over Siemens’ exact plans in this venture. Common rail provides an environmentally clean technology solution that conforms to the current international emission norms.

It contributes to making diesel cars cleaner, more economical, less noisy and sportier. Globally Siemens is the largest developer of Common Rail Direct Injection technology, followed by players like Bosch, Delphi, and Fiat.

The Piezo Common Rail (PCR) direct injection system is the latest advanced technology brought about by Siemens VDO, a subsidiary of Siemens AG.

It is estimated that by 2015, 60 per cent of the diesel applications in the country will be based on common rail systems.

Bosch and Delphi have already committed an investment of over Rs 500 crore in the country through their concerns in India namely, Mico (Bosch) and Delphi-TVS.

Bosch aims to transfer global automotive technologies to Mico to enhance technological sophistication of its customers in India.
