Small towns are driving the growth of online shopping portal eBay India with as many as 40% of shoppers coming from non-metros.
Small cities and towns are gaining momentum in embracing the online concept. eBay India has a 2 million strong community from across 240 towns in the country. We will continue to focus on these towns for growth, Goutam Thakar, country manager of eBay India, said here today.
"For instance, ethnic speciality products are sold from towns like Surat and Jodhpur. They attract the attention of international buyers as far as the US," he said.
In an effort to spread awareness and educate internet users on the various elements of e-commerce, eBay India has come out with an ‘eCommerce Guide’, which spells out basic business models of e-commerce.
The guide, launched here, reveals technology trends and resources relating to e-commerce. According to Thakar, e-commerce shoppers in India prefer fixed price format for the majority of lifestyle and entertainment category purchases.
"The lifestyle category is emerging as the key driver for online shopping. A piece of jewellery sells every 6 minutes and a mobile handset sells every 7 minutes," he claimed.
