Snake scare in Orissa Assembly
BS Reporter / Kolkata/ Bhubaneswar Jul 24, 2009, 00:57 IST

Orissa Legislative Assembly today witnessed an unprecedented scene with the spotting of a snake inside the house just before it assembled in the morning.

With the legislators scared by the presence of the live snake inside the house, the speaker had to adjourn the house several times during the day. However, with all attempts of the security staff and snake specialists to locate and catch the snake proving to be futile, he finally adjourned the house till tomorrow morning.

At about 8.30 am this morning, just before the start of the proceedings, a sweeper cleaning the house spotted a two and half feet long yellow snake moving near the chair of the chief minister Naveen Patnaik. The snake had its fangs open and was hissing continuously.

The sweeper rushed outside and shouted for help following which the watch and ward staff rushed inside trying to locate the snake. But the snake had vanished from the scene by then.

The assembly authorities immediately summoned the chief of local Snake Helpline, Subhendu Mallick to trace out the snake. The principal chief wild life warden and forest authorities were also informed. Even the commissioner of police rushed to the spot with a sniffer dog.

Since the snake could not be traced, the speaker, Pradeep Kumar Amat suspended the question hour and adjourned the house till 11.30am.

With the search team unable to locate the snake, the Speaker then adjourned the house till 3 pm and again up to 4 pm before finally adjourning it till Friday.

Meanwhile, the authorities have sealed the house and continuing the search. But the snake has not been traced till the late evening, sources said.

It may be noted, a similar snake fear gripped the state assembly in 2004 when the snake charmers had threatened to release snakes into the state assembly in protest against the crackdown on their activities by the wildlife officials. commissioner of police rushed to the spot with a sniffer dog. Since the snake could not be traced, the speaker, Pradeep Kumar Amat suspended the question hour and adjourned the house till 11.30am.
