| The Indore-based Soyabean Processors Association of India (SOPA) said soyabean production in India for the October 2003-February 2004 season was likely to be around 69.32 lakh tonnes against 43 lakh tonnes in the previous year. The export of soyameal has doubled as well.

| Rajesh Agrawal, chairman of SOPA, said seed arrival in Madhya Pradesh was estimated at 31 lakh tonne, in Maharashtra at 12 lakh tonne, in Rajasthan at 3.5 lakh tonne and in other states at 1 lakh tonne. There was a surplus stock of 14.82 lakh tonnes while 7 lakh tonnes had been retained as seeds.

| Export of soyameal and de-oiled cake touched 22 lakh tonnes despite lower than expected demand from south-east Asian countries like Malaysia and Japan owing to bird flu.

| Exporters have already shipped 22 lakh tonnes and 10 lakh tonnes more was expected to be shipped out in the March to September period, said Agrawal.

| SOPA data indicated crushing was around 36.89 lakh tonnes, while stock for plant and seed stockists was at 10.61 lakh tonnes. Estimated value of exports was about Rs 3500 crore against Rs 1400 crore in the previous season.

| Export consignments sent by rail/road stood at 1.25 lakh tonnes, while domestic sales was 4 lakh tonnes and stock at ports or plants in transit was 3 lakh tonnes.

| There were 73 crushing units with a capacity of approximately 150 lakh tonnes in the country, while mills in Madhya Pradesh had 110 lakh tonne crushing capacity. |
