State achieves 60 per cent mandays generation under MGNREGS
BS Reoporter / Kolkata/ Bhubaneswar Aug 03, 2010, 00:16 IST

The Orissa government has fallen short in terms of achievement of the targeted mandays in 2009-10 under the Centre's flagship programme- Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

As against the targeted 9.14 crore mandays under the MGNREGS, the state government could meet only 60 per cent of the demand by generating 5.51 crore mandays in the previous fiscal.

“Under the MGNREGS, the state government created 9.14 crore mandays in 2009-10. In 2007-08 and 2008-09, 4.3 crore and 4.32 crore mandays were generated in the state under the scheme. During 2007-08, 12.17 lakh households were given employment while 11.99 lakh households were provided employment in 2008-09”, said state Panchayati Raj minister Prafulla Samal.

Nayagarh, Kendrapara and Cuttack districts overshoot the mandays generation targets under MGNREGS in 2009-10, achieving 409 per cent, 291 %and 230%of the target respectively.

Nayagarh district recorded generation of 7.61 lakh mandays in 2009-10 compared to the targeted 1.86 lakh mandays while Kendrapara clocked generation of 4.44 lakh mandays as against the targeted 1.52 lakh.

Similarly, 17.67 lakh mandays were generated under MGNREGS in 2009-10 compared to the targeted figure of 7.69 lakh.

The performance witnessed under the scheme in Nuapada, Balasore and Bhadrak where the actual achievement was 14%, 22 %, 25 % respectively of the tagret.
