State forms e-payment facility for commercial taxes
BS Reporter / Kolkata/ Bhubaneswar Mar 05, 2010, 00:15 IST

As part of its e-governance initiative in tax administration, the Orissa government has launched ‘e-payment facility’ for collection of commercial taxes.

The chief minister Naveen Patnaik today inaugurated the new facility.

The new system would enable the corporates, traders and professionals to pay value added tax, central sales tax, professional tax, entry tax and entertainment tax among others on line. Only the persons having account with the SBI can avail this service.

Launched as part of citizen centric services, the e-payment facility has been launched on the State Bank of India (SBI) portal. A cyber treasury has been created in the Directorate of Treasury and Inspection (DT&I) which is linked to secretariat branch of SBI.

A separate portal is being developed by the commercial department which would expand the facility to traders and businessmen having accounts in banks other than SBI.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said, the new system would usher in a business friendly environment in the commercial tax administration. Besides, it would ensure transparency and efficiency in all level of administration.

He said, the successful implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) would depend on robust IT infrastructure as the tax base is likely to increase substantially.

Finance minister Prafulla Chandra Ghadai, chief secretary, T K Mishra, finance secretary, J K Mohapatra, commissioner of commercial taxes (CCT), Nikunja Behari Dhal and chief general manager, SBI, C H Narasimha Rao were present.
