State mulls Greater Peenya Industrial Estate
BS Reporter / Chennai/ Bangalore Jul 03, 2010, 00:45 IST

The Karnataka government plans to develop the Greater Peenya Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Bangalore, and also showcase it as a model industrial township in Asia. The government will soon acquire around 300 acres adjacent to the existing Peenya Industrial Estate in Bangalore.

“We have discussed the issue with the Peenya Industries Association and Karna-taka Small Scale Industries Association (Kassia) regarding the development of the new industrial estate. The government will give rights to these industry bodies to negotiate the price with farmers for acquiring land. The government will provide all assista-nce to develop the new industrial township,” Karnataka minister for large and med-ium industries Murugesh R Nirani said.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Kassia, here on Friday, he said the industry chambers would be encouraged to allot industrial plots to their members in the industrial estate. The Greater Peenya Industrial Estate will be an integrated township with residential facilities for workers where they can stay close to their workplace, thus helping decongest the city, he said.

To facilitate land acquisition for this mega industrial estate, the government will levy only 5 per cent service tax on the value of land instead of 12 per cent, Nirani said.

Earlier, addressing the function, Nirani suggested that Kassia set up a training institute to impart hands-on skills to fresh technical graduates to prepare skilled manpower.

Nirani allayed apprehensions of entrepreneurs and industrialists that there would be a paucity of power in the wake of new industrial units coming up following the Global Investors’ Meet. He promised adequate power as the government has recently cleared several power projects which in all will generate 12,000 Mw of power.
