Sterlite to restart operations of 600 Mw unit today
BS Reporter / Kolkata/ Bhubaneswar Sep 10, 2010, 00:07 IST

The 2400 MW (4x600) independent power plant (IPP) of Sterlite Industries Limited, a subsidiary of the London listed Vedanta Resources Limited, situated at Burkhamunda near Jharsuguda, will restart operations later today.

Sterlite, which had recently commissioned the first unit (600 MW) of its 2400 MW IPP, had temporarily suspended the operations of this unit after it had developed a technical snag.

"There was a technical defect in the 600 MW unit of Sterlite's power plant and the company has repaired the defect. The power plant will resume operations later today. As a result of the technical defect, there was emission of fly ash from the unit which was opposed by the locals who had staged a road blockade on Wednesday”, S N Mishra, the Jharsuguda district collector told Business Standard. He clarified that there was no case of air pollution.

The 600 MW unit of the IPP had gone on stream on August 22 this year. Sterlite is presently supplying 30-40 MW to the Orissa government after the operationalization of this unit and had committed to supply the entire power to the state grid by October.

The other three units of the Rs 10,500-crore power project are likely to be commissioned over the next one year
