Stockists corner isabgul stock amid fears of lower output
Kalpesh Damor / Mumbai/ Ahmedabad Apr 21, 2009, 00:10 IST

Estimate of lower isabgul (psyllium husk) output in the year 2008-09 has sparked off buying by stockists. The prices of isabgul have soared by around Rs. 100 per 20 kg in past couple of weeks following increased offtake by the stockists.

"The prices have increased as stockists have been cornering stocks since March end. So far, 4.25 lakh bags weighing 75 kg have arrived, of which 30 per cent has been purchased by stockists", said Vishnu Patel, owner of Son Psyllium Industries and director in Unjha

Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC). Unjha is the main isabgul trading center in Gujarat.

As per the marketmen the prices of export quality isabgul (raw material) have surged to Rs. 1,000 per 20 kg from Rs. 900 per 20 kg at the end of March. Similarly, isabgul prices for the domestic use have firmed up by Rs. 100 per packet (weighing 20 kg) to touch Rs. 1,125 in three weeks or so.

"Stockists estimate that the isabgul production in the country is likely to dip to around 10 to 11 lakh bags of 75 kg, while the consumption is pegged at 14 to 15 lakh bags. Lower output fears have led to increased buying by stockists", Vishnu Patel added.

On the other hand, foreign companies are yet to start buying. The company are waiting for clear picture of production to emerge, which is likely by April end.

It may be mentioned here that isabgul acreage in 2008-09 is estimated to have surged by 15 per cent largely on account of noticeable increase in area under isabgul in Rajasthan, the largest isabgul producing state in the country. Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are other main centers for isabgul in India.

Isabgul processors' estimate the production to remain at 12 lakh bags, which stood at around 11 lakh bags across the country in 2007-08.

Though isabgul acreage has seen a rise, isabgul yield is feared to be lower due to erratic weather conditions.
