STPI-Berhampur fails to attract IT majors
Hrusikesh Mohanty / Kolkata/ Berhampur June 18, 2009, 0:59 IST

The third Software Technology Park of India (STPI), being set up in Orissa at Ambapua on the outskirts of Berhampur, has failed to attract major IT companies even though the construction work on the STPI centre is nearing completion.

“We have talked to several reputed IT companies for STPI Berhampur, but none of the companies has given its firm commitment so far on starting operations”, said Manash Panda, joint director of the STPI.

He, however, expressed hope that the companies would evince interest to set up shops at Berhampur STPI centre as the impact of recession in the IT sector is gradually receding.

The proposed STPI centre at Berhampur is almost ready to function and it would start its operations very soon with the local IT companies, added Panda. This is the third such centre in the state after Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.

The centre has been built at an investment of Rs 5 crore on a three-acre plot on the outskirts of the town. STPI is an autonomous society under the Union ministry of communications and information technology.

The main objective of setting up the centre at Berhampur is to promote local entrepreneurs in the IT sector and also make the south Orissa region one of the preferred destinations for IT investment.

The STPI-Berhampur would work with the state government for promotion of the software exports.

It will act as a resource centre for the software-exporting units by offering plug and play office space and high speed data communication with uninterrupted data connectivity.
