Dear Students,

LAST WEEK WE ASKED:

Do you think it would be a good move to give weightage to 12 standard marks along with IIT JEE scores?

BEST RESPONSE

With the present circumstances prevailing that students put their full effort to crack the IIT entrance exam thereby neglecting board exams. A change in pattern will enable students to give importance to their 12th class exams as well. Until and unless students themselves realize the significance and scope of class 12th board exams in their future they will show least interest in them. Now by giving equal weightage to 12 standard marks along with IIT JEE scores students will not only concentrate on entrance exam but also devotee sufficient time for 12th exams.

                                          - Shivam Chhabra, Integral University, Lucknow.

OTHER RESPONSE

As of now, the Indian engineering colleges are facing a massive competition from students of science background. Hence, it's a good move to select the suitable candidates who are worthy for best engineering colleges. Giving such weightage criteria will increase even more competition for students of Std 12th. There will be clear cut competition between students to score higher than other students in order to bag call letters from good engineering colleges. Such move depicts that good engineering colleges will prefer only that students who are consistently performing well from their past performances.

                                      - Manav Badhwar, Amity Business School, Noida.

Giving weightage to the board exams along with entrance test scores is a conclusive measure to judge the abilities of the aspirants. It will bring back the lost  glory of securing high percentage in the board exams. Above that correct procedures of equalising the marks of various boards will be implemented which will increase the credibility of school imparted education. Hence this step will add a new dimension to the world of engineering entrances.

                                                                               - Dipika Sahoo, College Of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar.

Giving weightage to the 12th marks is equally important because board exams are taken very seriously by all the students. This is the time when students are on the verge of deciding their career path, whereby not only are they ambitious but also foresee themselves as being someone a higher level. Balancing the IIT-JEE and the board is tough but the 12th marks could uplift them to be selected in an institute which they really wish to pursue the course in.

                                                                                          - Ashwini Nandlal Dodani, Shanti Business School, Ahmedabad.

IIT-JEE entrance exams are conducted in a very refined manner, and it is considered as  one of the toughest entrance exam in India. As IIT-JEE has set their standard very high, I feel that they should not consider and give weightage to 12th STD marks. There are many bright students, due to some or the other problem they might not perform in Std 12th, but he/she scores extraordinarily in IIT-JEE entrance exam. This clearly indicates that he/she is eligible student, but due to the poor performance in 12th, they cannot decide that he/she is not an eligible student.

                                                                                  - Ashwinkumar Iyengar, Shanti Communication School, Ahmedabad.

Students will be inclined towards clearing competitive examinations rather than concentrating in their school courses. The school level education system is completely different than the pattern followed in the competitive examinations which forces the students to join coaching institutes in order to prepare themselves. If uniformity can be maintained in the pattern of examining the students in the school and in the competitive examinations then this problem can be shorted out. Till then the next generation of IIT-JEE are in the hands of the coaching institutes.

                                        - Indranil Barat, Department of Management Studies, Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.

IIT-JEE being one of the test , does not necessarily reflect an aspirant’s aptitude so the weightage to 12 standard marks along with IIT JEE scores is a welcome move. But we must be cautious as Indian education system is in a shoddy state of affairs, there being multitude of boards with different syllabus, marking standard, Poor educational infrastructure in rural area et al. Besides, Giving weightage to 12th board exam may lead to mass scale copying in board exams, in turn benefitting richer section of the society.

 - Nilaya Mitash Shanker, Shri Ram Swaroop Memorial College Of Engineering And Management, (SRMCEM), Lucknow.

A move to give weightage on 12 standard marks will motivate IIT aspirant students to focus on class room study rather than joining private coaching for IIT JEE scores and it'd also ensure that meritorious students get admission. Concern over the decline in quality of intake, often due to weak fundamental would be the prime reason before considering this policy. However, not having uniform marking system throughout the boards will cause inequality in the eligibility criteria for students. Only after having a proper infrastructure, this policy can be implemented and would be able to achieve it's goal.

                                                                              - Prashant Kumar, Shanti Communication School, Ahmedabad.

I totally disagree with giving 12th marks weightage in IITJEE. Teaching quality in our schools is not good. Our country has a huge shortage of good teachers. People don't neglect board its just that when you prepare for JEE you don't have to study seperately for class 12 as the syllabus is same. Its not fair to blame coachings. They just provide you guidance, everything else depends on your hard work and intelligence. Students in class 12 really don't know what career path they want to choose. They just don't have any information source. People who clear JEE are really smart people. Just because they were fortunate enough to afford coaching don't disrespect them.

Totally disagree. Education given in schools is not good. In coachings the level of teaching better than that given in schools. Also no student knows anything about a particular career at this stage.
