Twenty kgs of suspected explosives, recovered from an unidentified man in Aurangabad, turned out to be chloral hydrate, a sedative, the police said here today.
Earlier, the police were suspecting it to be explosive ammonium nitrate but it was established after tests that it is chloral hydrate.
The person got down from the Secunderabad-Mumbai Devgiri Express late last night and hired an autorickshaw asking the driver to rush. When the driver waited for other seats to be filled up, he asked the passenger about the contents of the suitcase he was carrying, they said.
“The man rushed out of the rickshaw leaving the suitcase behind. Octroi agents checked the bag resulting in the recovery of this powder,” a police officer said.
Anti-Terrorist Squad chief K P Raghuvanshi said the powder is used to add potency to liquor and the person ran away fearing action by the authorities.
A case has been filed with the Aurangabad police and further investigations are on.
