Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi has sought a Rs 25,893 crore grant from the Finance Commission for various projects.

Addressing the officials of 13th Finance Commission here on Thursday, the chief minister said performing states like Tamil Nadu had not been receiving their due share as successive finance commissions gave more importance to backward states, ignoring the needs of performing states.

The chief minister wanted the Finance Commission to increase the grants-in-aid for the maintenance of roads and building.

The state need more allocation from the Central Relief Fund considering the natural calamities, the compensation for which, especially crop loss, needed to be substantially increased, he said.

“The state memorandum has suggested new criteria and revised weights for determining the share of states in the divisible pool of central taxes.  We will thoroughly examine the request for various grants made in Chapter-12 of the memorandum aggregating to Rs 25,893 crore,” said Vijay Kelkar, chairman, 13th Finance Commission.
