Tata Power unveils its latest initiative for rural empowerment

Inaugurates BPO at Khopoli for the youth of the region, under the aegis of Mannat Foundation; The Call Center to create 120 jobs for the locals.

The Tata Power Company Limited (Tata Power), India's largest integrated private power utility, today unveiled its latest community initiative targeted at the youth of rural India; with the inauguration of its first rural BPO at Khopoli under the aegis of Mannat Foundation - the community initiative arm of the company.

Situated in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, Khopoli, and close to the Tata Power Hydro Generation facility; the 120 seater call centre lends itself to provide alternative employment to the youth of rural India with an aim of creating self sustained community development.

Initially, the call centre will employ 47 call agents, who have been selected and hired from Khopoli, Lonavla and the adjoining catchment areas and will be further scaled up to 250 agents by the end of the current fiscal.

Speaking at the inauguration Mr. Prasad R. Menon, Managing Director, Tata Power Company Limited said, ‘The Tata Group is committed to effective community development and believes that large enterprises are built in unification with the local populace which has helped us attain many milestones. We are confident that this call centre at Khopoli will become a benchmark in the way rural empowerment is nurtured by corporate India in the coming years.’

The Khopoli BPO is the first venture of Mannat Foundation and it has tied up with Tata Business Support Services (TBSS). Mannat Foundation will be responsible for hiring and providing the infrastructure whereas TBSS will train the employees, maintain the infrastructure with good ambience, provide secured work environment and manage operations of the BPO. 

During the selections of the first batch, the initiative attracted enthusiastic response from the local population. The selected trainees were given a month long pre-process training, comprising of basic communication and confidence building skills and post process training. These trainees received certification after the training period and were taken in as employees for the BPO.

Through Mannat Foundation, Tata Power intends to leverage information and communication technologies for BPO services on a pilot basis and generate employment for the local populace. This will further expose the rural youth to the hi-tech industry and assist them to eventually grow and build their careers. At the same time, it will also help develop a sustainable business model that is scalable and replicable.
