Tata Steel Apr-Feb sales up 22% to 5.54 mn tonnes

Tata Steel today said it has sold 22 per cent more steel at 5.54 million tonne during the April-February period against a year ago on account of steady rise in demand for products.

"The company achieved sales of 5.54 million tonne cumulatively up to February 2010 in the current fiscal year showing growth of 22 per cent over corresponding period of the last year," Tata Steel said in a statement.

The company saw its saleable steel production too rising by 22 per cent in the reporting period to 5.86 million tonne as against the April-February 2008-09.

Its hot metal output increased by 17 per cent and crude steel by 18 per cent to 6.60 million tonne and 6 million tonne in April-February as against the year-ago period.

In February alone, the company witnessed 13.5 per cent rise in hot metal production 5.87 lakh tonne against the corresponding month in the previous fiscal.

Its crude steel and saleable steel production for the month grew by 13 per cent and 0.40 per cent to 5.27 lakh tonne and 5 lakh tonne, respectively, from February 2009.

"Tata Steel completed February with an increase in its hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel production over the corresponding month of last year," the statement added.
