| Tata Steel January sales up 9% to 5.56 lakh tonnes |

 Tata Steel today said it witnessed 9 per cent rise in sales at 5.56 lakh tonnes in January on the back of improved demand from the construction and whitegoods sectors.
The company's January sales last year stood at 5.11 lakh tonnes.
The steel major said in the reporting month there was 8 per cent increase in sales of flat steel products and 10 per cent in that of long steel products. However, the company did not give out any details on the volume of these products.
Flat steel products are primarily consumed by automobile and whitegoods sectors, while long steel is used mainly by infrastructure firms.
During the month, the company saw its saleable steel output rise 11 per cent to 6.07 lakh tonnes from 5.48 lakh tonnes a year ago.
Its crude steel and hot metal production rose by 14 per and 13 per cent in January to 5.96 lakh tonnes and 6.50 lakh tonnes, respectively, against the year-ago month.
Tata Steel had witnessed 5.25 lakh tonnes and 5.74 lakh tonnes of production of crude steel and hot metal, respectively, in January 2009.
The firm said it "completed January with an increase in its hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel production over the corresponding month last year".
