Tata Steel Orissa plant equipment head for Kalinganagar
BS Reporter / Kolkata/ Bhubaneswar Feb 23, 2010, 00:42 IST

Tata Steel, which is setting up a six million tonne per annum integrated steel plant at Kalinganagar, the emerging steel hub of Orissa in Jajpur district, expects the arrival of equipment and machinery worth Rs 500 crore for the project by the end of 2009-10.

It may be noted that the steelmaker has already placed orders worth Rs 6373 crore for equipments and civil structures for its Kalinganagar project.

Till date, 11 consignments of equipment and machinery including blast furnace, sinter plant, electricals and Steel Melting Shop (SMS) worth Rs 200 crore for Tata Steel's Kalinganagar project have arrived in India

Meanwhile, the company's first consignment of equipment- the Steel Melting Shop (SMS)- has arrived at Kalinganagar.

The SMS for the project has been supplied by SMS Demag of Germany. The said consignment was shipped from Porto Marghera port of Germany and was received at Visakhapatnam Port recently.

Tata Steel aimed to kick off construction work soon on its Kalinganagar project. The steel major has already shifted around 800 out of the 1150 families and in talks with the locals in Kalinganagar to displace the remaining families.

Tata Steel's Kalinganagar steel project has been marred by delay of over four years which has scaled up its project cost. The original project cost which was worked out to be Rs 15,400 crore has now gone up to Rs 21,000 crore.

The steelmaker had signed a MoU (memorandum of understanding) with the Orissa government in November 2004 for setting up the integrated steel plant at Kalinganagar.

The protest against Tata Steel’s project was spearheaded by the Visthapan Virodhi Jana Manch (VVJM). VVJM was formed after the death of 14 people in a police firing on January 2, 2006 when the tribals clashed with the police while opposing the construction of the steel plant’s boundary wall.
