Tax exemption boost to SSIs
BS Reporter / Kolkata/ Raipur Feb 23, 2010, 00:33 IST

Chhattisgarh government has announced exemption of entry tax on the items manufactured by the small industries in the state.

The move is aimed at helping the small industries and encourage them for industrial growth in the state, Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh said after presenting the budget for fiscal 2010-11 in the Assembly today.

The government also announced to increase entry tax on lime stone used for clinker sent outside the state through stock transfer from 10 per cent to 25 per cent. This will help in the value addition and use of mineral within the state that will generate employment and revenue, Singh said.

In the budget 2010-11, Chhattisgarh government has announced many tax reliefs for the common people. Kerosene wick, kerosene stove, fried and roasted grams, camphor have been made tax free. In order to encourage usage of fly ash bricks, bricks made of fly-ash have been exempted from Entry tax. Similarly, Value Added Tax (VAT) on cooked food items has been reduced from 14 per cent to 5 per cent. The state government has decided to levy 7.5 per cent Entry Tax on cigarettes to discourage smoking, Dr Singh said. To encourage cinema industry and in the interests of public, entertainment tax on cinema tickets upto Rs 50 would be exempted from entertainment tax.

The state government grant for sprinkler and drip irrigation scheme will be increased from 30 per cent to 40 per cent.

The main opposition party, the Congress, has flayed the state budget and termed it as anti-people. There is no provision of giving respite to common man in the state budget, State Congress General Secretary Ramesh Varlyani said.

The state government had failed to keep the promise of giving Rs 270 bonus for a quintal of paddy to the farmers besides free power, Varlyani said, adding that instead of increasing entry tax on clinker, the government should have banned stock transfer.
