TCS eyes tier-II cities for future growth
BS Reporter / Bhubaneswar Jan 05, 2009, 00:47 IST

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s biggest software services provider, is eyeing tier-II and tier-III cities such as Pune, Nagpur, Gandhinagar, Kochi and Chandigarh to drive its future growth in the domestic market.

“We are keen on setting up our development centres in locations such as Pune, Nagpur, Gandhinagar, Kochi and Chandigarh. While the centres in Pune and Gandhinagar are expected to be operational by the end of this year, the proposed centres in Chandigarh, Nagpur and Kochi are scheduled for the second phase”, S Ramadorai, chief executive officer and managing director, TCS told Business Standard.

“There is ample scope for our operations in tier-II and tier-III locations. Over 70 per cent of the campus recruitment for TCS are conducted at tier-II and tier-III locations”, he added. The company is looking at a pool of 7,000-10,000 professionals for running the above centres.

In the overseas market, TCS was looking to establish its strong footprints in geographies such as China, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, West Asia and Africa. TCS had recently announced that it was aiming to ramp up its China headcount to nearly 5,000 in the next five years.

Asked if TCS was in the race for the possible acquisition of Satyam Computers, Ramadorai replied in the negative. He refused to elaborate further on the issue.
