He was speaking at the Tata group CEOs panel discussion at the Pan IIT Global Conference 2008, being organised at IIT-Madras.

This would encourage students to pursue PhDs and take up research in computer science and encourage other companies to follow TCS, he said.

Meanwhile, management guru C K Prahalad, in his special address, said over the next 15 years, India can produce nearly 200 million college graduates and 500 million professionals across all professions in the country.

The country can contribute to 10 per cent of global trade and there should be at least 30 per cent of Fortune 100 companies from India.

“The country should be a laboratory of thinking and innovation” and should create at least 10 Nobel Prize winners in Science and Arts, he added.

Commenting on the global financial crisis he said it is an opportunity for India to become stronger, vital and a more vibrant economy.

I agree with Rahul and Arindam on this issue. The companies anyway copy from documents and get show-pieces designed. Most of the jobs they do in India are out-sourced from the white-skin guys. No need for any experienced guys with some problem solving skills, which are harnessed only in IITs. The great designs of all jet/car engines, CHIPS, TV sets in the world have been produced by the 12-grads in India and the outputs of IIT B.T. grads. So why need to have any degree beyond those 20+ hornies.

It is sad to know how far from reality these top management are. Who does PHD from IIT nowadays? Only those who can not manage a job or get a good university abroad after B Tech and then continue to fail to do so after M.Tech? And you want to abosorb these students without interview? What is the quality of PHD anyway? Copy from 4-5 journals and produce something and people are going to get motivated to spend close to 6 years after B.TECH because they can get a job in TCS? Funny..

@ Arindam. PHDs are over qualified for the job, the job that be done by any diploma or intermediate. TRUE. But your generic comments of the people doing phd are all useless, hmmmmmmmmmm........ you need to open your eye. Anyway, PHDs will never go for any cosmetic sorts of work..And phd for job ?????????? Funny..
