Terror hits Mumbai again
Press Trust Of India / Mumbai Nov 27, 2008, 01:27 IST

16 killed, over 50 injured at 8 locations.

Terror struck the country’s financial capital late tonight as “coordinated” serial explosions and indiscriminate firing rocked eight areas across Mumbai, including the crowded Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal (CST) railway station, two five-star hotels — Trident (formerly Oberoi) and Taj — leaving 16 people dead and over 50 injured.

Armed with AK-47 rifles and grenades, a couple of terrorists entered the passenger hall of CST, opened fire and threw grenades, Mumbai General Railway Police Commissioner AK Sharma said.

The terror strike which began at 10.33 pm at CST, formerly known as the Victoria Terminus, claimed 10 lives in the premises of the station alone, police said. Three people were killed in a bomb explosion in a taxi on the Mazegaon dockyard road and an equal number were gunned down at Taj Hotel. The victims in the hotel were its employees.

The lobby of Trident hotel was on fire and the hotel evacuated, eyewitnesses said.

Maharashtra DGP AN Roy said tonight’s attacks happened in “at least seven places” and were a “terror strike”.

Sharma said 30 people were injured in the CST incident. Commandos were rushed to the CST, which wore a deserted look and train services suspended.

Some people were injured in the firing at Trident hotel, and taken to a nearby hospital in police vans and ambulance. Firing was also reported in Taj hotel.

Firing was reported at Colaba, Nariman Point and near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal and it was on till the filing of this report.

Firing was also reported at Cama Hospital in south Mumbai, police said, adding that a blast was reported in a taxi under a flyover in suburban Vile Parle. A bomb went off in a taxi in Mazegaon dockyard road.

According to Roy: “The suspected terrorists struck in a number of places. Terrorists have opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons.” In some places they lobbed even grenades. “In two hotels, some of them are still holed up....In Trident hotel, at least two terrorists are still holed up.”

Roy said that terrorists had opened fire at places and disappeared. “Some people are injured and the casualty figure is yet to be ascertained...Our people have reached the spot and are responding to the situation," he added.

In the national capital, the Union home ministry said it was keeping a close watch on the situation and would provide all necessary assistance to the state government.

The situation can only if the might of vote is used. Vote the right person in rather than any tom, dick and harry. Its for the educated people to cast vote for candidates with the right and clean profile. political Parties will be compelled to nominate the correct person. there is dearth of good leaders. No elders are required in administatioon but not that old that they are wheelchaired into meetings. India should start clensing from the top, the most corrupt.

For an Indian to get some changes done in ration card has to go through several procedures. But these Bangladeshis are residing in India with a valid driving license and ration card. This is only because of these politicians who are in requirement of vote, no matter from where it comes and whether it effects our country. First of all we as people must decide whether we want these no. of political parties. If answer is yes then these type of terror mishaps will be routine. JAI HIND

Such dastardly acts can never happen without the involvemnet of our own people.these guys should be identified and nailed down. At a time when holigans of indian democracy are fighting about issues like mumbaikar and bihar, tamil water for karnatak and vice versa, seperate telangana state, etc should answer a question: what are they doing to stop these things that affect us directly? ?Within india who the hell cares if i am called a bengali or punjabi? save us frm our own politicians!!

The Mumbaikars are being killed like anything. It is high time that the Government at Centre and state should realise that there is an urgent need for terriorist act and we must not encourage diplomatic relations with Pakistan rather we must attack pakistan to free the world from terrorism

I agree. There is little political will. Our leaders talk more and do less.

India is traveling to moon, but look at whats happened in Bombay. The scale, repetition and consistent occurrences of such incidents reflect the misguided priorities of India. It will take no more than USD 2BN to make 400 Million Biometric Smart Cards for Indians staying in cities. India needs to first know who the people are, when, where they are heading to. Unless, India can manage the direction of where its human resources are headed on earth itself, going to moon is a waste.
