Textile firms innovate to stay afloat
Vinay Umarji / Mumbai/ Ahmedabad Jun 03, 2009, 00:28 IST

Buoyancy seems to be returning among textile units in Gujarat even as they look to innovative ways like incorporating textile design software and customised ERP solutions to increase sales. More so, these innovatives measures are being taken up by smaller textile firms.

"Textile firms in Gujarat, especially in the region of Surat and Vapi, produce around 60 crore metres of cloth length per month, resulting in 12 crore pieces of sarees and dress materials at 5 metres per piece. Moreover, the industry processes around 1,200 designs. The firms are now looking for innovative ways to reduce cost of production which has resulted in deployment of software like Drape Soft for textile designs. These software reduce cost of design by 10-15 per cent as they come up with high volume design work in less number of time," said Rakesh Gandhi, chief executive officer of Dynamic Softlink.

According to Vipin Tuteja, executive director, production systems group and head integrated marketing & SAO, Xerox India Limited, textile firms are also moving from offset printing to digital printing solutions to save cost on packaging.

"Around 10-15 per cent of total printing marketing in Gujarat is contributed by digital and most of the clients are from the textile and pharma industry," said Tuteja.

Apart from textile design softwares and digital printing, textile firms are also moving towards deployment of customised ERP solutions.

"We have deployed ERP solutions since one year and we can say the move has been timely. During the slowdown, we have been able to save cost by 7-10 per cent through ERP solutions. We have been continually looking for innovative options to stay afloat," said Arvind Shah, director of Shahlon Industries Private Limited, which recently pegged a turnover of Rs 150 crore.

Meanwhile, offering special price points for SMEs for as low as Rs 10-12 lakhs, SAP has also been in the process of helping companies reduce their total cost of ownership (TCO) for ERP solutions, apart from introducing its two more products namely 'A1 Fast Track' and 'Business By Design' in the Gujarat market.

Similarly, Datatex Textile ERP, an industry specific solutions has also been introduced in Gujarat.

While, Infinite is the business and implementation partner for Datatex Textile ERP in India, South Asia and Australia, Datatex is a global leader in the apparel and textile ERP space with broad range of customers that have annual revenues ranging from a couple of million dollars to over $ 6 billion.
