Power generation in the country has witnessed a jump of 7.9 per cent in September as new thermal capacities were added and gas availability from KG basin fueled electricity production, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) said today.
However, the electricity generation fell short of the targeted production for the month by over 3,500 Mw.
"(It was) basically due to increased thermal power generation which is due to availability of gas from the KG basin ... Coal-based power generation has risen as new capacities have been added," CEA Chairman Rakesh Nath told PTI.
The gas production from Reliance Industries' KG fields stands at 45 mmscmd, of which the gas-based power plants in the country receive 20-22 mmscmd.
Electricity generation in September was 63,564.82 Mw, 3,501.07 Mw short of the programmed 67,065.89 Mw, the CEA data showed.
The official data released today showed that the growth in electricity generation during September (7.9 per cent) was higher than 4.4 per cent registered in September 2008.
