Tobacco crop size in AP fixed at 170 mn kgs for 2009-10

The tobacco crop size in Andhra Pradesh has been fixed at 170 million kilograms for the year 2009-10 as the same in the preceding year.
The Tobacco trade's plea to fix the crop size at 190 million kilograms was rejected by the board which met at Delhi recently, Tobacco Board Vice-Chairman K V Rayudu said.
As Tobacco is a narcotic crop, its area of cultivation is regulated by the tobacco board. Unauthorised or excessive production of the crop is punishable, he said.
The Directors of tobacco board submitted a memorandum to the union minister of commerce and industry Anand Sharma asking him to extend the subsidy given to the fertiliser Murate of Potash to Sulphate of Potash applied in the crop's cultivation, Rayudu added.
